Today's Nerd Musing was You know you're a nerd when you still have a library card membership. I still have my library cards from each state I've lived in. Not sure why I haven't thrown some of them away, but it seems the library card has become somewhat of a relic in today's e-book culture.
I'll be completely honest with you, I don't like paying for things and I live on a shoestring budget. I own an e-Reader and take full advantage of reading my favorite books on it, but if I cannot download a book for free, I take to the library to get my free read on!
There is an awesome app you can download on your tablet called Overdrive which is an electronic library that allows you to borrow books from your local library and download them onto your e-reader. You will need a library card of course, but its a quick convenient way to take out a library loan without physically having to drive out to the library. The caveat to using the Overdrive service is it only allows you to loan up to 14 days as opposed to the normal 28 day lending period at your local library. I read relatively fast, but sometimes I'll put off reading time for several days and find that my loan expired right before I've reached the end of the book, so make sure its a book you know you will finish within 2 weeks.
Overdrive doesn't always have e-book titles available when you search for a book you're interested in, and you may have to go to the library instead. I actually enjoy going to the library during my spare time and enjoy the act of browsing for books. It reminds me when I was younger when my mom, brother and I would go to the library for a few hours and grab our favorite books and read them. My mom used the library as our temporary babysitter to help keep us occupied while she had a moment to relax and have a quiet read.
I am still a library card carrying member and I'm quite proud of it. As long as books can be read for free I'm on it. I'm currently reading "Gone Girl" by Gillian Flynn on my e-reader and I have "Sister Citizen" by Melissa Harris-Perry on reserve at the public library ready for pick up. The most relaxing moments of the day is just sitting back and reading a really good book!

The best part about still having a library card is that many people have forgotten that libraries have books. I've learned how to request any book I want in the U.S. with just a click of the mouse. I will admit that my library made downloading books for ereader difficult. I don't understand why I should have to wait for somebody to "return" an epub book. ReplyDeleteI agree naysue...I also forgot to mention that waiting period on Overdrive is crazy long. I waited for Fifty Shades of Grey for 3 months before it was available to download on my Kindle app. It was definitely not worth the wait btw...meanwhile I will put a book on reserve at the local library and its available within a week, It's weird how its longer to wait for an e-book than it is for a hard copy. #Irony.
ReplyDeleteI still have a library card, also! I will admit, I mostly use it for Overdrive through the NC Digital Library system. Like you mentioned in your post, I'm kind of lazy about getting books back to the library on time. I might even have a fee I need to pay right now lol.

I owe my library money .. whoops! But I'm going to pay them off with Christmas money because I'll definitely all the free books I can get since I'm starting my own book blog. The library was my refuge as a little nerd child.

Proud owner of my library card. Though nowadays, I admit that when I want a book, I go straight to Amazon. I don't read much current popular fiction, which is what I used to use my library card for. Now I use it for reference materials, but knowledge is knowledge and books are books. #bibliophile4life
